Werewolf Without Cards: Set Up a Game With One Phone

You do not need a Werewolf deck to organize a game night. You need a way to assign secret roles, a clear sequence for night and day, and a group ready to bluff. A phone narrator can guide the game while everyone plays together in the same room.

Werewolf Undercover is designed for 5–18 players and replaces the physical cards with an app. It is a practical setup for an apartment hangout, a college game night, or a family gathering where nobody brought a board game.

Prepare the room before the roles

Arrange seats in a circle and lower any background music so every player can hear the narration. Charge the phone before starting and silence notifications that could interrupt the game. Keep the screen private whenever secret information is shown.

Explain that this is a face-to-face party game. The phone provides structure; the players provide the conversation. Nobody needs to perform a character voice or be an experienced gamer to participate.

Start with a simple setup

Open the app, configure your group, and follow the on-screen instructions for roles and narration. For a group learning Werewolf, fewer special roles make it easier to understand why something happened overnight.

Keep information secret

Physical cards are not the only way to reveal a role accidentally. Looking over someone’s shoulder, reacting to the screen, or whispering during the night can all expose information. Give each player the time and privacy needed to read their role.

During narration, wait until your role is called. When it is time to discuss, make sure everyone can speak before the loudest players settle the vote. These small habits matter more than elaborate decorations.

Can you play without an app too?

Yes. For a homemade version, write roles on identical slips of paper and ask a moderator to run the night. Fold the slips so nobody can recognize a role from the outside. The moderator should know the action order and remain neutral.

The tradeoff is preparation: somebody must distribute roles, remember the sequence, and manage the game. An app provides a guided alternative when your group prefers to use a phone.

Is this the same as Mafia without cards?

Werewolf and Mafia share a familiar structure of hidden teams, secret eliminations, discussion, and voting. Names, powers, and victory conditions can vary. If your friends know Mafia, explain the Werewolf roles first instead of assuming the games are identical.
